Curious about what made this fall family session one of my favorites? Let me tell you—it all came down to those little moments that just make you smile!
As we were wrapping up the session, Marco, gave me the cutest smiles of the whole session. Then, in the most adorable moment, he grabbed my hand, walked me to their back door, and pretty much told me, “Alright, I’m done!” I couldn’t stop laughing; it was like I’d won the lottery of sweet kid moments.
This session took place right at the Barrale family’s home in the Hudson Valley, and there’s just something special about photographing a family in their own space. Little ones seem to feel more at ease and comfortable being their true selves, and you get all those real smiles and fun moments.
As Trish and I walked to their backyard, my eye lit up!! The sunlight was streaming through the leaves, giving us that perfect golden-hour glow among all the changing colors. I was so ready to create some fall magic for them—this setting felt like a photographer’s dream!
We ran, we played, and we made sure to give the boys plenty of time to explore and have fun on their own while sneaking in some time for Mom and Dad to grab a few photos together.
I like to call this part of the session their "mini date." I absolutely love this moment because it gives parents a chance to reconnect during the busyness of raising little ones. So often, we get caught up in capturing all those adorable shots of our kids and forget to take a minute for ourselves. These photos are a reminder that, as parents, you deserve to celebrate your relationship too!
Running around with these boys was such a joy. The love and laughter between this family were so heartwarming, and their outfits? Spot-on for fall! Cozy, warm tones against those fall colors—perfection.
Huge thanks to Tamera and Anthony for being so patient, kind, and trusting. I can’t wait for you to see some of these adorable photos from their family session!
Family Session Tips
The Color Palette:
They chose a gorgeous, earthy color palette with soft neutrals that perfectly complemented the natural fall colors, along with deep blues, warm terracottas, and rich brown tones. It all came together so beautifully against the golden light and changing leaves, creating a cozy, timeless look.
3 Tips for choosing colors:
- Choose a patten first. For example if mama is going to wear a dress with a patten, take a look at the color tones in the dress. Use those as the base for choosing colors for the rest of the family. (Tamera and her family did this perfectly! Two out of three of her boys had colors that were in her dress, while her youngest had a white shirt which is always a perfect compliment to any color palette!).
- Use neutrals. Neutrals are your friend! They tie in so nicely to any color palette while also creating a great base to complement your skin tones. A lot of times bright and bold colors can create a color cast that may not be the most flattering.
- Coordinate, Don’t Match:Try to coordinate your outfits instead of matching them perfectly. Pick colors that look great together while still letting each family member show off their own style. This way, the photos feel way more natural and relaxed!
